What are the limitations of hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a therapeutic technique that uses hypnosis to help individuals overcome certain problems and conditions. It is mostly used for treating different types of mental health disorders such as anxiety, stress, insomnia, and addictions.
Just like with medication you can’t always be guaranteed a cure. You get out of it what you put in. There is still an element of personal responsibility and if you are determined to continue to have that bad habit such as smoking then even hypnosis will not work for you. In order for it to work you must be willing for the change to happen, want them to happen and to do or stop doing things to make them happen.
What will happen during a hypnosis session?
During a hypnosis session you will sit or lie down (whichever makes you feel more comfortable). We will begin by defining your goals and outcomes for the session. When you are ready, you will then be asked to close your eyes and begin to bring your awareness to the inside. As you do this and go deeper into your hypnosis you will be encouraged to follow instructions and provide feedback throughout the session, during this process you may release, uncover, gain insights or rehearse the changes you are moving towards making. When it is time, you will be instructed to come back to the here and now and open your eyes.
During hypnosis you may feel heavy or weightless, you will be able to hear everything that is said to you, you will have a heightened state of awareness, you are able to move if you want to. It feels like that stage you reach where you are just about to fall asleep. It is a very pleasant experience and everyone i have worked with always comments on how relaxed they felt and how amazing they feel after.
Afterwards you may feel a little disorientated for a moment or two and you may have some tingling in your arms and legs for a minute or so as your body changes from a deeply relaxed state to being wide awake. This is not unpleasant and is just like the first moments when you wake up in the morning.
Hypnosis is active not passive. This means that it’s not something that is done to you. You are guided through the experience. It is important that you follow instructions and respond to your hypnotist with feedback. If a suggestion given doesn’t fit for you, it’s your job to tell us that so that we can help assist you in finding the right fit. During hypnosis you can still speak, adjust yourself, and be aware of your surroundings.
What are the benefits of hypnosis?
The benefits of hypnosis vary from person to person and depend on the problem that is being addressed. Some of the most common benefits include:
– relief from anxiety or panic attacks
– relief from certain types of pain
– relief from insomnia
– relief from fear, fear of heights, fear of flying, fear of spiders.
How do I know if I can be hypnotised?
If you are able to follow a set of instructions then you can be hypnotised. In fact, every day, we all experience a form of hypnosis many times. Have you ever driven somewhere and once arriving at your destination thought how did I get here or unable to recall all of the journey? This is known as highway hypnosis.
You may also have been totally engrossed in a movie or book and not heard someone speaking to you again this is a form of light trance.
Is hypnosis safe?
Yes, hypnosis is very safe, it is a natural state of mind. Hypnosis has been around for a very long time and its history goes through many different cultures as far back to the Egyptians in 1550BC. In fact we often go into states of hypnosis each day when we are doing processes on auto pilot such as tying shoelaces, reading, watching tv and even speaking. Whilst these actions only require a light state it is still a change of state. With therapeutic hypnosis you simply go into a deeper state to access the subconscious mind, which is how it makes change possible.
What are common misconceptions about hypnosis?
There are many misconceptions about hypnosis which can lead people away from it or prevent them from seeking help for their conditions. Some people think that all you need to do is lie down, close your eyes, and the hypnotist will take over. It doesn’t work like that at all. Hypnosis is a state of mind where you are more receptive to suggestions from the person who’s guiding you through hypnosis.
People can often be fearful of being made to do something they don’t want to whilst in hypnosis, or of losing control or being given instructions to do silly things. Whilst there are hypnosis shows out there for entertainment value, this is not what you would find in a hypnosis environment. At the end of the day you are not coming to see me to dance like a chicken and I really cannot see any reason in a therapeutic environment for that to happen, it also would be very unethical for me to do anything that would make you feel uncomfortable and is not in the format of any of my sessions with any client.
Instead, what you will discover is that hypnosis is about giving you back control over the behaviours which you have little control over. A heightened sense of awareness and an environment where you can feel at ease and comfortable.
Will I fall asleep?
No, whilst you can use hypnosis to help you fall asleep that wouldn’t be practical at the hypnotists office! Although we do use the term sleep in hypnosis we are referring to a deeply relaxed state as if you are asleep. In this altered state we are able to speak to your subconscious mind to make the changes you want. Once that has been achieved you are instructed to come back to the room and you will find yourself awake and alert after a very relaxing and restful experience.
It is important to note here that during hypnosis you will hear everything I say, you will be aware of everything around you, you are in control and you cannot get stuck in hypnosis.
Will hypnosis make me say and do things I don’t want to?
During hypnosis you remain completely in control. If you don’t want to say or do something then you wont. Hypnosis is nothing like in the movies and very different to stage hypnosis. If you do decide to say something you can be safe in the knowledge that sessions are kept confidential.
Are there any conditions that hypnosis isn’t suitable for?
Whilst hypnosis is a great tool in helping many people there are some conditions (schizophrenia, psychosis, epilepsy & clinical depression) that require extra caution and care. For these conditions it is always advised that you speak to your GP/Psychiatrist first to get their consent and then inform your hypnotist to make sure that they have the skill set to work with these conditions. Remember your hypnotist is not qualified to diagnose or prescribe.
If your G.P does give written consent for hypnosis you will be asked to sign a disclaimer to the effect of making it your own personal responsibility for your health and that should there be any decline to your I will cease sessions and consult with your doctor. My policy is to not re-commence any sessions until your G.P gives the all clear.
Please note that I do not work directly with any diagnosis. I work on assisting with managing symptoms and behaviours.
Can I get stuck in hypnosis?
No, there are no records of anyone ever becoming stuck in hypnosis. That is because hypnosis is a naturally occurring state. If whilst you were in hypnosis and your hypnotist suddenly died, you would not be forever stuck in hypnosis, you would just fall into a normal sleep and wake up as you normally would.
